Rude Awakening

The victim is tied in the center with a crowd closely monitoring every move it makes. Some praising its beauty, others cursing their luck! Wish they had one better! The carnival is about to set-off and those expensive new designer Kurtas will just have to be protected from potential stains. Everyone is expecting a triumphant savior of mankind with a knife bigger than sword to take the center stage. The prey is looking powerless; maybe deep down, it knows what’s coming! Suddenly, a butcher-looking fatso turns up to the relief of the crowd waiting so anxiously for the show to begin. Cheers, Chatter, Noise! Next, a roar of “AllahuAkbar” and bang!

The animal has been slaughtered. Muslims across enjoying the scene while kids watch with an interest of a lifetime sitting on the shoulders of their guardians, as if it were a Hollywood blockbuster. The eyes couldn’t have sparkled brighter. The fun almost orgasmic!

Qurbaani? In the name of Allah? Well if that helps you sleep at night!

To be continued….

TV journalism's Aafia mafia

Dr Aafia has been hijacked, and not just by the Americans, who had her flown to the US and gave her a dubiously excessive punishment for attempted murder, but by the Pakistani media itself.

Just recently Meher Bokhari conducted a TV programme on Samaa on Dr Aafia Siddiqui, and it was an atrocious attack on the idea of responsible, or even mildly responsible journalism. She opened her piece on the programme with an emotional plea about the “daughter of the nation” and how “time” would ask Musharraf about his actions. Is this journalism or jingoism?

We Have Bigger Problems than Afia Siddiqui... There are myriad "Qaum ki Betiyaan" Waiting for Justice!

Okay so we have rallies up and down the country.. the roads are blocked, tyres are being flamed up and the politicians (accompanied by our enlightened awaam) are getting all hoo-haa over the sentencing of Dr Afia. How can they miss such a golden opportunity presented to them on a silver platter?

My Oh My!!!

Courtesy The Daily Sun

It had to be 1-1. How can I even dare to think that we were going to pull-off something as extraordinary as decent, sensible defending in the final minute? I hate it when referees want to be the center of attention in a match of football and unfortunately Phil Dowd was in exactly that mood when he took charge of an already spicy affair at the Stadium of Light in a match of Strength against guile and finesse!
